Dental disease is one of the most common diseases in cats and dogs, as young as 2 years old. Not only is dental disease painful for your pet, but the increased bacteria in their mouth can be associated with other conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, and liver disease. As many as eight in ten pets have dental disease!

How do I know if my pet has dental disease?

Watch out for:

  • smelly breath – this is very common
  • drooling or dropping food from their mouth
  • a loss of appetite (this is not a common sign, many pets eat well with dental disease)
    weight loss

What does dentistry involve at Timbertown Vet?

Cats and dogs in Wauchope and surrounds can rest easy knowing that we have their dental health as a top priority!

We can’t ask your pet to “open wide” – so dogs and cats with dental disease need a general anaesthetic to allow us to assess their teeth and clean thoroughly under the gum line. Some dental disease is reversible, however if it is too advanced, it becomes irreversible, requiring extractions. The number of extractions is always hard to predict, until a full exam under anaesthetic, and possible dental xrays are carried out. It is mostly more than what we think it will be!!

If we can’t help you at Timbertown, our sister clinic in Bonny Hills is equipped for more involved dental work.
